You’ll always be mine
Born in Bromley in the 60s, I was lucky that Palace were big news having just been promoted to the old First Division for the first time, so that was that, they were my team for life.
I credit Palace with teaching me to stay strong in the face of (regular) crushing disappointments. Losing to Southampton in the 1976 FA Cup semi final was the first and so began a 50 year journey of hope that one day I would see us lift that trophy.
Travelling on a coach up to Anfield to see us lose 9-0 to Liverpool, sitting at Highbury watching Ian Wright relegate us and Steve Claridge scoring a last minute Play Off Final winner for Leicester were the lowest of the lows.
There were plenty of highs though, that special semi final day at Villa Park 1990, Dougie’s late goal at Stockport to keep us in the Championship and the Blackburn play off final are great memories and ‘I was there’ moments.
It was the FA Cup I wanted though. Two Finals at Wembley to watch us lose to Man Utd, having led both matches with 10 minutes to go and I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen in my lifetime.
May 17th 2025. To be there with my kids and to see Palace lift that beautiful trophy was so special, a lifetime memory and I honestly don’t think it can ever be surpassed.
I hope these posters grow in significance the further removed we get from that glorious day in May. The opportunity to look back and reminisce – sneaking past Stockport and Doncaster, Mateta and the Millwall keeper, Eze’s goal at Fulham, Sarr’s double against Villa – all moments in time and part of the wider context.
I hope Palace fans get as much enjoyment out of the poster as I have had creating it. Thanks for reading and see you at Selhurst (Main Stand Block G)!
